Put Your Records On

By Corinne Bailey Rae

Music and song have been a big part of my life since I was little. I went to a preschool where we sang the Rolling Stones and Bob Marley. We were constantly reminded that, “You can’t always get what you want.” These days I listen to music in the car with my mom and we sing along to our favorite songs. My current favorite is “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae. I enjoy the rhythm of the song, the way that it makes me feel, but most importantly, the lyrics.

Right now, this song is my favorite. It has an upbeat feel and it makes me happy when I hear it. It’s not a particularly popular song, per say, but I like to listen to it over and over. It’s not too loud or overbearing and has a calming quality to it.

When I listen to this song I hear her relaxing voice. The music is soft and the instruments don’t overtake the message of the song. The beat is a bit slower than most songs and the harmonies are beautiful.

“Girl, put your records on, tell me your favorite song

You go ahead, let your hair down.” - I love these lyrics because they remind me of hanging out with my friends, listening to music, and being together - something that we can’t really do right now. I also think that it’s cool that she sings about records. I love music but have never seen, heard, let alone know how to “play” a record.

Music and song have been a big part of my life and I am happy that I found this song. I like the way it makes me feel and I like the lyrics. Music helps connect me to my family members and to my friends and helps me to relax.
